New AWS Region: Hyderabad (ap-south-2)

AWS opened a second region in India on 22 November 2022. What changes and what does not.

On 22 November 2022 AWS launched the Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) region, ap-south-2, with three Availability Zones. India now has two regions: Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad.

Why it matters:

  • Data residency and compliance with a second location in India.
  • A disaster recovery target in a different geography from Mumbai, without leaving the country.
  • Lower latency for users in the south and east.

The region is opt-in: it is disabled by default and must be enabled once per account.

Not every service is available on day one, so check the regional services list before planning. For DR copy data with S3 cross-region replication, RDS cross-region snapshot copy or read replicas, and ECR replication. Prices differ slightly by region, and IAM is global, so no new users are needed.
