RDS: Multi-AZ, Backups and Restores

Amazon RDS runs MySQL, PostgreSQL and other engines, handling patching, backups and failover.

Feature	What it does
Multi-AZ	A standby in another Availability Zone, with automatic failover (about a minute or two)
Automated backups	Daily snapshot plus transaction logs, kept 1 to 35 days
Point-in-time restore	Creates a new instance at a chosen second
Read replicas	Scale reads, not a substitute for Multi-AZ

Keep the instance in private subnets, allow access only from the application’s security group, and enable encryption at rest at creation (it cannot be added later without a snapshot copy). Test a restore on a schedule. Aurora Serverless v2, generally available since April 2022, suits spiky workloads.
