re:Invent 2020: Changes Worth Knowing

Four announcements from this year's re:Invent that change everyday decisions on AWS.

re:Invent 2020 (30 November to 18 December) was fully online. Four changes that affect daily work:

Announcement Why it matters
S3 strong read-after-write consistency (1 December) Overwrites and deletes are visible immediately, so workarounds for eventual consistency can be removed
EBS gp3 volumes (1 December) Baseline 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s independent of size, about 20 percent cheaper per GB than gp2
Lambda container images (1 December) Package functions as images up to 10 GB, and Lambda bills per millisecond
Amazon ECR public (preview) A public registry on AWS that can serve as an alternative to Docker Hub

Try gp3 on a non-critical volume:

aws ec2 modify-volume --volume-id vol-0abc123 --volume-type gp3 --region ap-south-1

Volumes change type in place without detaching. Also in preview: Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus and Amazon Managed Grafana. Treat previews as non-production until they reach general availability.
